Card #45 - Rick Cerone

The Card
Here's a fun one - Rick Cerone!  Rick was a three-time Yankee, always finding a way in his long career to rejoin the Bronx Bombers.  Did you know he was seventh in MVP voting in 1980...including a first place vote?!

You have to love this pic.  The warm-up jersey, the ratty batting glove, the batting cage...and that helmet!  Do you think that's his catcher's helmet, his batting helmet, or both?

The Story
I found Cerone and his lovely 'stache in the commons box at my local card shop.

The Price
$0.15

The Condition
The edges are a little ragged, if I recall correctly, this was the only card available in the commons box.

The Verdict
I'm an Orioles fan and thus the Yankees are my mortal enemy, but there's something about that late 70's/early 80's Bronx teams that are quite intoxicating.  Curse you for your charisma, Cerone!

Card #44 - Britt Burns

The Card
Sweet fancy Moses...check out the butterfly collar on Britt Burns' jersey!!!  Are you kidding me???  Even Britt can't keep a straight face wearing that thing.  The number of fashion crimes against humanity perpetrated by the White Sox is staggering.

I started collecting in the mid-80's and always thought of Burns as a middle of the rotation guy, but he was quite dominant in his first couple of seasons.

The Story
Another common's box discovery.

The Price
$0.15

The Condition
The front of the card looks great, but on the backside, there's a dimple near the bottom edge.  (Are we still talking about baseball cards?)

The Verdict
This card is like a time capsule, man.  For a bygone era we never want to see again!

Card #43 - Mike Cubbage

The Card
This is a beautiful shot of Mike Cubbage lifting a ball to what I'm guessing is left-center field.  You've got a couple of Phillies in the background and perhaps Bob Boone's catcher's mitt...and that old-timey orange piping at Shea Stadium.

And glasses!  The modern player doesn't really wear glasses anymore.  Stupid medical advancements and lasers are eliminating glasses from the game.  Boo!

The Story
Another common's bin rescue.

The Price
$0.15

The Condition
It's in great shape - hardly touched.

The Verdict
This is a deceptively cool looking shot - it reminds me of those old Sports Illustrated posters.

Card #42 - Rick Sofield

The Card
You're looking at a spring training turtleneck, which I have to imagine is highly unusual!

Rick Sofield didn't have much of a playing career, but if you're a Pirates fan you'll probably recognize him as your current third base coach.  He's good friends with Clint Hurdle from their days in the minor leagues.

The Story
I got this in the common's box at my local card shop, but this card is very familiar to me.  I'm guessing my brother must have owned it when we were kids.

The Price
$0.15

The Condition
It's in excellent shape.

The Verdict
How in the heck did the Twins end up with Cleveland Browns colors on their border design?
